Democrats might typically hold an advantage in a special election to replace a disgraced Republican who has been denounced by his own party. Including the seat most recently held by Santos, Republicans represent all four Nassau County-area congressional districts. So it's no surprise that national Republicans are working to keep Santos' district red and avoid further narrowing the party's already razor-thin majority in the House.

But as the special election to succeed the disgraced former congressman has made painfully clear to Democrats, Santos’ victory was not a fluke or anomaly. (Less so 40 years ago, when Republicans ran roughshod here and Ronald Reagan alluded to Nassau County as a Republican’s idea of heaven.) Nassau County in 2024 is sharply divided and – in a word – angry. The year before, Democrat Laura Curran, the top official in Nassau County, was ousted by Republican Bruce Blakeman. But more liberal New York Democrats often point to the current problems as Cuomo’s legacy.

“Representative Santos sought to fraudulently exploit every aspect of his House candidacy for his own personal financial profit,” the report concluded. "Believe it or not, you needed to have an in to get a job at McDonald's back then, so my brother, who was working in the kitchen, recommended me for the job," Hendel, 66, tells CNBC Make It. "I never thought it would be my forever job," says Hendel. And he goes, 'Do you think you're good at it?' In 1990, Hendel became the owner/operator of his first McDonald's restaurant in Brooklyn.

According to the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials, Latinos ran for top offices in 44 of the nation's 50 states.
